Betty Mabee dead at age 88

(Photo: Betty Mabee with son Larry Mabee at the scene of some of their greatest triumphs -- Santa Anita Racecourse)

Betty L. Mabee, who with her late husband, John, helped build one of California's great Thoroughbred breeding empires and played a key role in the blossoming of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, died Monday at her home in nearby Rancho Santa Fe. She was 88.

Mrs. Mabee passed "peacefully and quietly," according to her son, Larry, who noted that his mother had finally succumbed to an extended illness.

A warm, personable woman with an easy smile, Mrs. Mabee made a point of carving out time in her busy life to be deeply involved in numerous charitable organizations and programs during more than half a century in the San Diego area. She had a special love for projects involved with children in need and was a founding member of Voices for Children and the Angels of Aseltine Auxiliary.

Mrs. Mabee, a native of Unionville, Missouri, grew up in Iowa and married John, her high school sweetheart, to start a partnership that was to last for 60 years and see them reach great heights in the world of business, as well as fame and fortune in the Thoroughbred industry.

The Mabees moved from the heartland to San Diego during World War II and opened a mom-and-pop grocery store that evolved into the 30-store Big Bear Supermarket chain. Subsequently, the Mabees started and ran Golden Eagle Insurance Company, California's third-largest workers' compensation carrier with more than 1,300 employees. But the couple discovered their true love in 1957 when they bought two horses for $6,000 at the Del Mar Yearling Sale.

That small investment led to the founding of Golden Eagle Farm in Ramona, California, which grew from 197 to 568 acres at its height in the early 2000s. The farm began with a handful of horses that expanded to more than 400 racing and breeding stock -- supplemented by an additional 150 head that were quartered in Kentucky -- during a highly successful run that saw the Mabees become not only the leading breeders in California, but national champions and Eclipse Award winners in 1991, 1997 and 1998.

Among the Mabees many equine successes, the best of all -- and Mrs. Mabee's personal favorite -- was Best Pal, a rugged California champion they bred and foaled at their farm who went on to win more than $5.6 million, including the inaugural running of Del Mar's most prestigious race, the $1-million Pacific Classic, in 1991.

Following the death of her husband in 2002, Mrs. Mabee agreed to join the board of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club as a director, a role she served in until 2008, when she took on the title of Director Emeritus.

Besides her son, Mrs. Mabee is survived by three grandchildren.

Service arrangements have not been made final.

The purchase of The Crosby was accomplished in conjunction with investor and partner Ron Huston. Jeff Woolson, managing director with CB Richard Ellis Golf and Resort Properties Group in Carlsbad, California, was the broker on the transaction.

Irma Duran Lucero Inaugural Fundraising Pro-Am recap, usual dose of random stuff

This past Saturday I played in an event at the beautiful Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa in Rancho Santa Fe, California called the Irma Duran Lucero Inaugural Fundraising Pro-Am tennis tournament. This event, the brainchild of Rancho Valencia's Head Pro Eduardo Sanchez and Eva Stimson of EMS Marketing Consulting, is intended to benefit the Mammogram for Tecate project as well as the Susan G. Komen Foundation. For those that are not aware, Tecate is a small town in Mexico where there is currently no mammogram machine and also an alarming lack of awareness of breast cancer and concepts like early detection.

The format was mixed doubles and there were two divisions; male pros were paired with female amateurs and female pros were paired with male amateurs. The list of participating pros was an impressive one and read like a who's who of former players and teaching pros in the greater San Diego area. Among the pros: Alejandro Hernandez, Marcos Zuniga, Andrew Wakefield, Oscar Plotnik, Brent Davis, Patricia Tarabini, Caroline Vis, and many others. Also on site supporting the cause was Angelica Gavaldon and another former top WTA player with multiple grand slam doubles titles.

The event was a lot of fun and very well put together by Sanchez and Stimson. It was great to see so many friends (and great players) in one place and to be on court with them in such a fun and relaxed atmosphere and for such an important cause. There were so many smiles and so many laughs, it was an awesome thing to be a part of and I know I am not the only person looking forward to playing the event next year.

The fact that philanthropic giving suffers in difficult economic times is not lost on me. Great thanks go out to the sponsors of the event who stepped up to make the event possible as well as to the amateurs that paid the big bucks to play wi
th guys like me. Please check out the website which is linked to in the first sentence of this entry. ---------------------------------------------------------------

(Rancho Santa Fe resident) Phil Mickelson, 38, at Torrey Pines last year.

Mickelson won his second straight Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club, Pacific Palisades on Sunday, Feb. 22.

"For the last two years at Riviera, Mickelson has benefited from spending more time at home with his family by taking the aerial route to the tournament from where he lives in Rancho Santa Fe outside San Diego," according to The International Herald Tribune...

'Staying at home, seeing my kids for dinner at night and sleeping in my own bed has been a big factor as to why I've played well the last two years," Mickelson said.

"I can't believe I didn't think of this earlier. This year I am going to do the same thing."

Mickelson has a one-hour commute by air to Riviera via nearby Santa Monica airport.

The left-hander has looked rusty in his first three tournaments, missing the cut at the Phoenix Open, finishing 42nd at the Buick Invitational and tying for 55th at last week's Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

This week he faces a typically strong field at Riviera Country Club where world number three Padraig Harrington heads a line-up featuring 10 of the top 20 players.

"I've been fighting to get my scores down and I'm making some big mistakes score-wise," Mickelson, 38, told reporters in the build-up to the seventh event on the 2009 PGA Tour.

"It's been more challenging for whatever reason to get my game sharp. My game has been a little rusty but it doesn't feel far off."

With a final-round 75 Sunday at Torrey Pines, Mickelson posted the highest 72-hole score in 19 career starts at his hometown tournament. He finished at 2-over 290, with his scores getting worse each day (70-72-73-75).

Buick InvitationalMickelson was coming off a miserable week on the road where a 76-73 missed the cut at the FBR Open that ended Feb. 1.

But Torrey Pines was home cookin', and the Mick has won the tourney three times. With Tiger -- five
Buick wins in last 10 years -- temporarily tanked, he is the only former Buick winner (from the past decade) in this year's tourney.

Want to take a look at Mickelson's RSF house. Virtual globetrot through this link. And if you've got a good bailout, the Mickelson estate is for sale, asking price upwards of $10 million. Want to know more about what's up with Phil. Follow this link to his blog.

ER, WOMEN'S RUGBY? YOU BETCHA. (This weekend at San Diego Polo Club)

"Friday sees the kickoff of the San Diego Invitational tournament, there will be many games to watch and many friends to see and catch up with. The best games watch will be the held on the premier pitch, and will involve the USA Women’s teams." --

"This is a shared blog among the 20 women who have been selected as the U.S. Sevens Rugby World Cup practice squad, and we’re preparing to make history. You see, in all of the years of Sevens World Cups — held every four years since 1993 — there’s never been a Women’s Sevens World Cup (to clarify, women have competed in 15s World Cups since 1991). In Dubai next March, all that will change. And we can’t wait to be part of it. And to make you part of it!

In this blog, you’ll meet each of us and hear about our training trials and tribulations, stories from tour, nutritional strategies and about that time when Phaidra … actually, you won’t hearabout that. But the rest is true."

The USA Women's International 7 (the USA National team) takes on the world at the San Diego Polo Club, 14555 El Camino Real, jst off Via de la Valle this weekend, beginning Feb. 13.

GOLDEN EAGLE FARMS IS ON THE MOVE...TO CALZADA DEL BOSQUE AND VIA DE LA VALLE. 28 ACRES. 80 HORSES. MANY ECLIPSE AWARDS. AND NOW SALT LAKE READY FOR MORE ACTION.

(Videos: 1. Salt Lake at Golden Eagle Farm; below, 2. Salt Lake a game third in Grade I 1992 Vosberg Stakes)

Golden Eagle Farm is comprised of seven barns, over 150 paddocks, and Bermuda grass pastures up to 15 acres to provide the most natural environment possible for our stock.  This natural approach ensures that all of our horses are not only physically healthy but mentally sound as well.  Our fields are walked seven days a week and each horse is physically evaluated and temped.  On a monthly basis each horse is weighed and evaluated for body condition.  Our equine residents eat a diet comprised of Alfalfa and Orchard grass, supplemented with a custom grain mixture developed with the help of our Equine Nutritionist, Dr. Stephen Duren.  Dr. Duren visits the farm on a quarterly basis to check on the progress of growth on the horses and make any changes to the diet program that is necessary.

With the exciting changes happening at Golden Eagle Farm, we have currently limited our boarders to mares here for breeding purposes.  We are still excepting a select number of sales preparation, breaking/training horses, and lay-ups.  Please contact Janine at (877) 34-EAGLE orjanine@goldeneaglefarm.com if you are interested in any of these services.

GOLDEN EAGLE FARMS. THE MABEE FAMILY JEWEL MOVING FROM RAMONA TO RANCHO SANTA FE. LONGTIME RANCHO SANTA FE RESIDENT BETTY MABEE AND HER SON LARRY MABEE, A HORSEMAN AND DEVELOPER OF RARE BREEDING, REGULAR CONSIGNEES AT BARRETT'S EQUINE SALES, TWO-TIME WINNER OF THE ECLIPSE AWARD AS AMERICA'S LEADING BREEDER, WINNER OF THE KENTUCKY DERBY..

Golden Eagles still soar high above the land that bears their name—Golden Eagle Farm, one of the premier Thoroughbred breeding farms in California.  Established by John and Betty Mabee in 1972, Golden Eagle Farm is located in the rolling hills of Ramona in beautiful San Diego County with two locations totaling over 700 acres.

Golden Eagle Farm’s familiar racing silks have appeared on the back of some of the most notable graded stakes horses in North America for the last 20 years.  Betty L. Mabee, her late husband John C. Mabee and their son, Larry Mabee have raced some of California’s biggest racehorses such as Best Pal, General Challenge and Excellent Meeting.

The Mabees have long dominated California's owner-breeder ranks.  They have taken home three Eclipse Awards for North America’s Outstanding breeder in 1991, 1997 and 1998. In 1992 they reigned as North America's leading owner and breeder by money won. To date, the Mabees breeding program has produced more than 130 stakes winners, the majority of which they raced in their own colors. They were also named “2000 Owners of the Year” by a member vote of the Thoroughbred Owners of California.  In 2007, John and Betty Mabee were inducted into the California Hall of Fame. FOLLOW THIS LINK TO GOLDEN EAGLE FARMS.

LCJD Stays Hot on Bishop's Heels
The La Jolla Country Day Torreys packed away a 3-2 win over Horizon on Friday to boost their record to 14-3-2 overall and 3-1-1 in league. The Torreys trail Bishop’s by one point in the closely contested Coastal South Conference.

With the threat of impending rain, the Torreys jumped into the first half creating multiple chances with urgency. The Torreys appeared snake-bitten as they hit the crossbar on three occasions, meanwhile missing other close calls at the net.

Kees Thompson handed the Torreys the 1-0 lead on a header off a cross from Alex Fleischhacker. AfterColin Young sent a strong shot to the net that was deflected, Zach Wolfenzon put in the rebound for the 2-0 advantage.

GK Michael Bailey, who started in spite of a nagging elbow injury, did an exceptional job holding the Panthers scoreless before leaving early in the second half.

With many key starters out of the game, the Torreys gave up two late goals but were able to anchor down for the win. Philip Poyhonen, who suffered an arm injury in the previous game, held his own despite having to play with a cast.

The Torreys play another away game against league contender Canyon Crest Academy on Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 3:15 p.m. before meeting Bishop’s for a rematch at home on Friday, Feb. 13, at 3:30 p.m.

Pity the poor Padres: David Eckstein is the face of the franchise now

The Padres finally made their big off-season free agent player acquisition. David Eckstein. Ouch.
No disrespect to Eckstein who has had a fine career making so much out of so little in terms of physical attributes. But DOUBLE-OUCH!
The fact is the Blue Jays couldn't get rid of Eckstein fast enough last year. They finally gave him away to the DBacks where he had a mediocre run. He's in his late 30s, too, no power, no range, no arm and now switching to a new position, second base.
That's pathetic. So are all the excuses and I'm grandfathering them back to the early 2000s. For years, Padres officials have been touting their player acquisition skills, the buying low, selling when used up, locking up guys with "San Diego discounts," all that lying crap.
The fact is the Padres player development apparatus has been broken for the entire John Moores stewardship. It's been pathetic and even ludicrous when Padres officials claimed the minor league baseball ranking services understimated San Dieo player potential. But not surprising since that's what incompetent people have to say. How else could they keep their jobs or even self-esteem?
The only reason the decrepit John Moores 2000-2009 era -- he did better in the late 1990s with teams he inherited before his lackeys got going -- wasn't blasted in real time was the woefully poor state of the NL West. So, the Padres won a few divisions with .500 records and got bounced out of the playoffs each time winning barely a game.
Moores is from Houston, and not suprisingly took a page out of Enron's scambook. He levereged into Padres ownership and used the club for personal financial gain with Padres fans at the bottom of his pyramid scheme. Now, his entire net worth is simply the increase in franchise value through no contribution of his own.
And so, David Eckstein, nice guy, ultimate hustling ballplayer -- as opposed to hustling faux ownership -- has become the face of Padres franchise futility. His acquisition pretty much says it all. The Padres are going to lose somewhere around 100 to 105 games.
Padres fans: Condolences and good luck. Maybe Moores will clear out sooner rather than later so the rebuilding process can ensue (although the Moorad deal appears to leave Moores as principal owner for now).
My fellow former Rancho Santa Fe neighbor has left a bitter, if not revolting, legacy.

DOCK ELLIS RIP: ELLIS, 63, DIED OF LIVER FAILURE SATURDAY, DEC. 20 AT A LOS ANGELES HOSPITAL.

HE AUTHORED ONE OF THE MOST MEMORABLE SPORTING EVENTS IN SAN DIEGO HISTORY.

From Lysergic World San Francisco, April 16-19, 1993

Los Angeles, April 8, 1984- Former Pittsburgh Pirates' pitcher Dock Ellis says he was under the influence of LSD when he pitched a 1970 no-hitter against the San Diego Padres.

Ellis, now co-ordinator of an anti drug program in Los Angeles, said he didn't know until six hours before his June 12, 1970 no hitter that he was going to pitch.

"I was in Los Angeles, and the team was playing in San Diego , but I didn't know it. I had taken LSD..... I thought it was an off-day, that's how come I had it in me. I took the LSD at noon. At 1pm, his girlfriend and trip partner looked at the paper and said, "Dock, you're pitching today!"

"That's when it was $9.50 to fly to San Diego. She got me to the airport at 3:30. I got there at 4:30, and the game started at 6:05pm. It was a twi-night doubleheader.

I can only remember bits and pieces of the game. I was psyched. I had a feeling of euphoria.

I was zeroed in on the (catcher's) glove, but I didn't hit the glove too much. I remember hitting a couple of batters and the bases were loaded two or three times.

The ball was small sometimes, the ball was large sometimes, sometimes I saw the catcher, sometimes I didn't. Sometimes I tried to stare the hitter down and throw while I was looking at him. I chewed my gum until it turned to powder. They say I had about three to four fielding chances. I remember diving out of the way of a ball I thought was a line drive. I jumped, but the ball wasn't hit hard and never reached me."

The Pirates won the game, 2-0, although Ellis walked eight batters. It was the highpoint in the baseball career of one of the finer pitchers of his time, and arguably, one of the greatest achievements in the history of sports.

PETE NEWELL WHO COACHED THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA-BERKELEY 1959 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP BASKETBALL TEAM  -- AND THE 1960 U.S. GOLD MEDAL OLYMPIC TEAM -- DIED ABOUT 10:45 A.M. MONDAY, NOV. 17 AT THE RANCHO SANTA FE HOME OF EARL SCHULTZ, WHO PLAYED AT CAL FOR COACH NEWELL AND REMAINED A CLOSE FRIEND. SCHULTZ IS A RETIRED DOCTOR WHO LOOKED OVER NEWELL'S HEALTH.

A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Church of Nativity in Rancho Santa Fe. The first of two events celebrating Newell's life will be held Dec. 3 at the Pauley Ballroom on the Cal campus, starting at 5 p.m. It precedes the Bears' game against DePaul at 7:30 p.m. There also will be a memorial service/testimonial at 9 a.m. Dec. 15 at the Sacred Heart Chapel on the campus of Loyola Marymount, Newell's alma mater.

(Photo left: College Basketball Hall of Fame Coach Pete Newell with Bobby Knight, before Knight's Texas Tech team played Stanford at Newell's San Jose basketball tourney Dec. 2006. Courtesy.)

"He's 93. He had a wonderful life, and it was just old age," Schultz told The Associated Press. "His health was not good, because they had removed two-thirds of his lung and he had smoked for many years. It was starting to be a real struggle for him physically. He was getting more weak and dwindling away a little bit."

Career highlights of basketball coaching icon Pete Newell, who died Monday at age 93:

  •  He coached the University of San Francisco (1946-50), Michigan State (1950-54) and Cal (1954-60) to a combined record of 234-123.
  •  His 1949 USF team won the National Invitational Tournament title when that event rivaled the NCAA tournament.
  •  Newell posted a record of 119-44 in six seasons at Cal, taking four teams to the NCAA tournament.
  •  The underdog '59 Cal team beat Oscar Robertson and Cincinnati, then Jerry West and West Virginia at the Final Four to capture the national championship.
  •  The 1960 Cal team was 28-2 and lost to Ohio State in the NCAA title game.
  •  Newell won his final eight matchups against UCLA coaching legend John Wooden.
  •  Newell coached the 1960 U.S. Olympic team to a gold medal in Rome, his club winning every game by at least 24 points.
  •  After retiring as Cal's coach in 1960, Newell served as the school's athletic director for eight years before becoming a team executive in the NBA. As general manager for the Los Angeles Lakers, he pulled off a trade to get Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
  •  For two decades until his death, he operated the Pete Newell Big Man's camp, where he taught post-play fundamentals to college and professional men and women, including Hakeem Olajuwon and Shaquille O'Neal.
  • Remembering Pete Newell (From The Shark, Jerry Tarkanian, Nov. 21...)

I was heart-broken to learn of the passing of Pete Newell on Monday.

I absolutely loved Pete. More than anybody else, he influenced my career. I idolized the guy. I went to every clinic that he spoke at and got to know him really well.

I’ve never told anybody this story, because I didn’t want to embarrass Pete, but in the early 1970s the Lakers offered me their coaching job.

Pete picked me up at LAX and we went over to the house of team owner Jack Kent Cooke. Pete was the GM. Bill Sharman, the coach who had just retired, was there. Chick Hearn was there. Cooke’s aides were there. We were sitting in the living room, and Jack Kent Cooke was talking about what it would take to win. He asked Pete, what do we need? Someone said we need a power forward, what about Sidney Wicks? Sharman says, that would be great. I say, yeah, Wicks is a fine player. Pete said, if we can (also) get a big man ... and Jack starts yelling at Pete. Weren’t you listening? He scolded Pete in front of everybody. The next morning, I turned the job down. More of The Shark's Blogpost on Coach Newell, follow the link...

VISIT WITH BUD BLACK, RANCHO SANTA FE RESIDENT AND MANAGER OF THE SAN DIEGO PADRES AS WELL AS A SLICE OF MAJOR LEAGUE LIFE. MAJOR LEAGUE PLAYERS ARE PEOPLE, TOO.

Black will be back in 2009, Padres management confirmed on Sept. 29. Warren Miller, Padres communications guy, issued a news release saying his contract would be honored. Kind of a non-news news release since Black has a 2009 contract.

However, Sandy Alderson and Kevin Towers, prez and gm respectively, "were not available" for comment. Just like Sarah Palin. Speaking of not available, John Moores, owner of the Padres, and a once visible resident of Rancho Santa Fe, is somewhere in transit. Au revoir.

It's good news for Black, but analysts wonder how long the gig will last. Padres management did fire one coach today -- Black's good friend, and bench coach, Craig Colbert.
